Four Leadership Archetypes
One of the most interesting leadership frameworks I’ve encountered came from an unexpected place: Burning Man.
Imagine a 2x2 matrix. One axis: masculine and feminine. The other: active and passive. Four types of leadership, each powerful in its own way.
Active Masculine
- Military hierarchy. Goals, tasks, duties, orders, direction. Kings, generals, great CEOs - this is the dominant form of leadership in our society. An active masculine leader tells the team what to do with clarity and conviction. They trust the guidance. They believe that following it leads to safety and success.
Active Feminine
- Intuition. Interpersonal skill. Feeling the energy of the room, the emotions of the people you’re engaging with, and using that intelligence to guide what you do or say next. An active feminine leader halts a meeting when she senses tension or something unsaid, brings it into the open, and clears the field for clean decisions undistorted by subconscious noise.
Passive Masculine
- Holding space. Creating structure so others can shine. Leadership from behind the scenes - building the environment, then stepping back so the team can bring their fullest gifts. They feel safe to take risks, free to play full-out. Think of a great coach working behind the scenes so athletes can shine on the field.
Passive Feminine
- Seduction and charisma. Being so magnetic that people want to follow you, want to please you. Cleopatra with her subjects falling over themselves. Martin Luther King speaking with vulnerability and passion, inspiring a crowd, igniting a movement.
You’ll feel natural operating in one or two of these archetypes. Others will sound uncomfortable.
The key to top 1% leadership: master all four. Transition seamlessly to whichever the moment demands.
